The Yorkshire coast and countryside have something for everyone
Road Cycling - if you like being out on two wheels you'll love this area. For road cyclists, the quiet roads that criss-cross the Wolds start right outside the front door. This is generally a low traffic area and you can ride for miles without seeing a car. The Wolds are less challenging than the Yorkshire Moors but there are some pretty steep hills with gradients 15% and above. But the great thing about undulating countryside is there is always a downhill after an uphill:-) You'll find some excellent information on routes here provided by a local cycling enthusiast, and also here from Sustrans. We have our own local favourite loops starting and finishing at South Wing and you're welcome to contact us for details
Off-road Cycling - one of the best places in the UK to try out your mountain bike skills is Dalby Forest. It's a 30-minute drive from South Wing but worth the effort. There are clearly marked traffic-free trails to suit all ages and abilities, some wonderful views and you can hire bikes if you've not bought your own. Plenty of parking on-site and a couple of good eating options to restock those calories!
You'll also see Dalby Forest in our 'places to visit' section there are plenty of great reasons to visit as well as the cycling

Walking - there are some great options for walking, from a stroll along the beaches to some strenuous hiking on the Wolds Way and Cleveland Way. You can join the Wolds Way close to South Wing - turn right out of the car park, turn left at the mini-roundabout, then walk for approximately 500 metres and you'll see a sign to the left taking you past Windmill Farm.
The closest point to the Cleveland Way is at Filey Country Park - drive to the furthest point from the entrance and park up (it's pay & display and they also use Ringo). From here there are spectacular views across Filey Bay, and you can choose from a cliff top walk along the Cleveland Way, head out along Filey Brigg (be careful!) or make your way down to the beach.
The nearest beach walk is at Hunmanby Gap. It's a five minute drive or a 40 minute walk, and there is parking available. 'The Gap' forms part of Filey Bay which at low tide offers more than seven miles of sweeping sands. It's a dog-friendly beach all year round and there is a café between the car park and the beach.
If you simply want a quick stroll close to the house, there is a path around the adjacent golf course which is approximately one mile and you will get sea views, as well as being able to enjoy the woods. Please note that this is a 'pay & play' option - the owners of the golf course charge a small fee to contribute to the upkeep.

Golf - there are some excellent local options including Filey Golf Club, Scarborough South Cliff (great views), Flamborough Head Golf Club (there are lots of great reasons to visit Flamborough Head and this is one of them) and Ganton Golf Club which is apparently the finest inland links course in the UK
Fishing - fresh water fishing is available in the village within walking distance from the house at Rosedale Fishing Lake. If you fancy a spot of sea fishing the easiest and cheapest option is from one of the local beaches - Hunmanby Gap and Filey Brigg are both popular and there is a local Facebook group where you can get some local advice.
There are a number of boat options from Scarborough which make a good day out and you're more likely to catch something. We've been out with Skylark a couple of times from Scarborough, and had a good experience. Other providers include Crusader Fishing Trips also from Scarborough, and Yorkshire Rose Fishing Trips in Bridlington, 07732 211209
In times gone by you could catch some seriously big fish locally, huge tuna the biggest of which was 851lb!

Surfing - the North Yorkshire coast is now firmly on the UK surf map and there are plenty of great options. If you want to take a lesson, the nearest is Secret Spot at Cayton Bay which has a very reliable wave and features on Magic Seaweed. Another good choice is Scarborough Surf School. If you have your own gear you have lots of choices including Reighton Sands, Cayton Bay, Scarborough (both bays depending on conditions) then further north there are some good breaks near Burniston, then Sandsend and Staithes
You WILL need a wetsuit, even in summer

Coasteering - the best local spot for coasteering is around Thornwick Bay and you can organise a trip with a number of local providers including Secret Spot, and Scarborough Surf School
Kayaking and SUP - paddling a kayak or board is a great way to explore the local coastline. There is lots of wildlife in the area and you're quite likely to see seals, dolphins and porpoises, plus lots of seabirds including gannets, kittiwakes and razor bills. If you are very lucky you may even see a puffin, particularly around the Bempton area near the RSPB reserve.
If you have your own kit you can put in at any of the local beaches including Hunmanby Gap (it's quite a walk down there from the car park with a kayak or SUP). Always check the tide times and be aware that the tide runs up and down the coast - the incoming tide will push you south, the ebbing tide will take you north (it floods to Flamborough and ebbs to Edinburgh is the way I remember it!). Just as importantly, check the wind speed and direction. If the wind is blowing offshore (i.e. out to sea) then please do not venture out on a SUP.
SUP rental options are available at Dexters and Fluid Concept 01723 354263 both in Scarborough and Scarborough Surf School
There is a freshwater option at North Yorkshire Water Park which is also offers a wide range of activities including cycling, swimming and zip lining.

Tennis - the nearest public tennis is at Filey Tennis Courts, a public tennis facility located at Southdene Filey Rd, Scarborough, North Yorkshire, United Kingdom YO11 2TP. There are 10 public tennis courts at this tennis location. The tennis courts are not lighted. You can contact this tennis facility at 01723 381344
Swimming - if the weather is good and the sun is shining the best place to swim is at one of the lovely beaches. Bear in mind that this is the North Sea and you'll probably need a wetsuit unless you are seriously hardcore!
There are some good pools locally including Scarborough Sports Village which has two lovely pools available to the public and suitable for all ages and abilities. Some of the nearby holiday camps also have pools such as Flower of May and Primrose Valley.
